Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is certain that summer’s signing Diego Carlos will play a “big chunk” of the 2022/23 season following a successfully operated on an Achilles tendon rupture. Carlos has had an operation to repair the injury that he suffered during his second Villa match in the match against Everton the previous weekend. The Brazilian, a reported PS26million player from Sevilla will be absent for several months, however Gerrard is confident that the 29-year old will be a key player in the coming season. It’s certainly a loss to let go a player of such significance, Gerrard said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace. Every day that passes, the closer he gets to returning and we’ll offer him all the support and patience that he requires from a medical point view. He’ll be back in action next season, without doubt. We’re confident about that. It’s extremely difficult to establish the time frame on this injury since the procedure in this instance as well as most of the time it’s fairly straightforward. The crucial thing is the way that rehabilitation progresses and how you can hit your goals in the process. However, we can say with certainty that the player will continue to play and will play a significant part of the season.
Two weeks are left of the transfer window , and Gerrard has been mulling over whether defensive options are required due to Carlos the injury. Centre-half Kortney Hause hasn’t been playing since January and had an operation on her knee in the summer, returned fully-time in training earlier this week.
Gerrard told reporters:
“We’re having talks behind the behind the scenes to determine what we will do. I don’t believe there’s any urgent need. We’ve three centre half-fit players who are all set to go. Kortney has recently joined the team and is now back in full training , and there are some great young players who are developing on the sidelines as well. There’s no need to act urgently in the next few hours or days. We have time until the time period to consider whether we’ll require additional support in this area.
Villa came back from their defeat in the opening day at Bournemouth to defeat Everton 1-1 in the first leg at home.Danny Ings as well as Ollie Watkins teamed up well against Everton and Emiliano Buendia impressed when he replaced Philippe Coutinho as a second-half substitute. He made his case for the starting position by scoring the winning goal.
Gerrard stated: It’s not an issue of choosing favorite horses or the best front three it’s about horses that are suitable for their courses and what we believe the game ahead of us demands. We’ve plenty of attacking options and top talent with different strengths.
