What’s the background story to The Staircase?

In December 2001, the novelist Michael Peterson called 911 to inform the police that his wife fell down the stairs. The report suggested that it was caused by her drinking and Valium consumption, though the toxicology report later proved that. After the body of Kathleen was scrutinized, it was found that Kathleen was murdered by a bludgeon as a result of her husband’s being the sole household member at the time, he was a the main suspect.

In 2003, the jury found him to be guilty of her murder. The prosecution claimed that he committed murder after she discovered naked images of men on his laptop and emails from a male escort and killed her using an iron tube that was used to ignite the fire.

Peterson kept his innocence. Five years after his conviction, the story is rewritten. Kathleen passed away following an attack by an Owl.

You read it right An Owl. Peterson’s friend said that the cuts on Kathleen’s scalp are consistent with being attacked by an owl with a barred. An examination in 2009 of evidence showed that Kathleen had one tiny feather inside her hair. Additionally, wood from a tree’s limb was caught in her hair that was removed from her hair by the roots.

Is Michael Peterson still in jail?

The judge is not. In 2011, a judge dismissed the verdict of the trial that had been conducted and ordered a new trial because the verdict was unsound. Fast forward to 2017 and Peterson took what is known as an Alford plea to voluntary manslaughter.

The defendant can acknowledge that the prosecution has sufficient proof to prove their innocence however, they are not required to admit to guilt. He was released as his sentence was 86 weeks in jail However, he had already completed that.
