At the age of 26, Landor had left country home of Germany to pursue an education in art and design in Britain and then became an early Fellow of the Royal Society of Industrial Artists. The company’s focus was on the design of packaging and labels for a variety of iconic brands, from Marlboro cigarettes, aunt Jemima as well as Sara Lee. Postwar Americans concerned about the necessity to track calories, created new markets for the older products. It was the year that the Miller Brewing Company (founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1855) came up with a brand of beer known as “Lite.” Miller intended to use this brand to appeal to two kinds of consumers who were concerned about calories. One type of drinker already consumes beer but would prefer a beverage that has less calories when it tasted similar to beer. The other type of drinker was hesitant to drink beer due to the high calories. Miller wanted to have the perfect label that would help their beer stand out and convey a sense masculinity. In order to achieve that, Landor designed a label that had a heavy Gothic script that linked Lite to the company’s German roots. The brand had been “accepted to be featured in the annual awards show which is hosted at the “Art Directors Club of Los Angeles and Art Direction of New York” and was highly praised by the national media.
